We rehearsed Big Sky, Forest Cathedral, Dreamers, Fair Trade
Rob encouraged us to Google “shape note singing” to get a sense of how it sounds. This is an early traditional style of singing with a heavy beat and strong, unmodulated singing that remains popular in Appalachia.
For next week:
Know Thy Worth, I Wish I Knew, Until All of Us are Free and One Voice.
Bass sectional next week: 10/24 at 6:00, announced by Robert
Cathy Barker read the statement of Debra Sheetz who submitted the song Dreamers. This is a new Judy Collins song, giving voice to the Latino community. Judy Collins is a social justice singer-songwriter, going back to the 60’s. The Music team discussed the appropriateness of our choir singing this song with its first person lyrics. In the course of discussing this with local organization Unete and with the Collins band it was decided that it would be appropriate with an introduction to put it in context. Russell Walden of the band also offered to arrange the song for choir and solo voice.
Bill led announcements reminding us of the Retreat this Saturday, 10-4 at the Old Siskiyou Barn. Details were in yesterday’s email.
Carpool will leave Safeway in Ashland at 9:15. Talent car pool meets at Daena Ross’s house in Talent. Please let her know if you are leaving from there if you haven’t already done so. Plan to arrive at the Barn by 9:45 so we are ready to start at 10:00.
Bring Music, inside-shoes or socks, bag lunches, and your name tag.
Please join us for a day of exploring our songs for the year and exploring how we can repair creation through singing our songs.
Mary Anne for Performance Team: meeting on Monday, 10/21 at 3:00pm at UCC Peace Church on Siskiyou and Morton in Ashland.
Nancy Rush-Yates reminded us of the Oct. 31 Halloween Potluck.
We’ll meet at 6 in Wesley Hall. (Social Committee helpers please arrive at 5:45)
Costumes encouraged.
We won’t be using the kitchen, so bring your food ready to eat. It helps to have a little card labeling ingredients for people with food sensitivities. (gluten free, vegan, vegetarian ..)
Please bring your own dishes, utensils and drinks so we can tread lightly.
Our regular rehearsal will start at 7 in Wesley Hall.
